The town had its own vineyards and cultivated them under its direction, there was even a bar at the town hall where the city wine was sold. The town paid special attention to viticulture. The winegrowers had their association – Brotherhood of St. Urbain, patron saint of winegrowers. Skalica´s vineyards are characterized by a small architecture called "vineyard cottages". These are vineyard houses that are used to process and store wine. More than 500 of them grew on the surrounding slopes, which makes Skalica one of the towns with the largest number of vineyards per person. Skalica´s blue frank wine is a popular variety that acquires its characteristic taste through local microclimatic conditions. In Skalica you will find many wine cellars and wine producers such as the Masaryk or Kopeček winery.

Winery At Franciscans in Skalica

It represents the regional presentation place of the Civic Association Wine route Záhorie, which brings together grape growers, wine producers and service providers in the field of gastronomy and tourism associated with wine traditions. The wine shop is part of the cultural and social center of Skalica, a Franciscan monastery.

Skalica´s frank wine - is a popular variety that acquires its characteristic taste through local microclimatic conditions. It is a typical variety in this wine region.

Skalica´s ruby wine ​​- a world-famous wine from the Skalica´s  wine-growing region, it is characterized by its color, after which it got its name. It is a mixture of Blue frank wine blue, St. Lawrence and Blue  Portugal varieties. In 2018, the European Commission granted protection to the name Skalický rubín – Skalica´s ruby wine by granting the PDO - Protected Designation of Origin.

 "Get to know Wineries from Skalica"

If you want to get to know the beauty of vineyards, vineyard cottages and at the same time get to one, the civic association "Wine route  Záhorie" has been organizing an activity called "" Get to know wineries from Skalica "every year since 2018. From mid-June to the end of the summer holidays, you have the opportunity to visit the individual winemakers, who have a "service" that week. Every week, a different winemaker from Skalica has a restaurant open for you, where you can see, experience and especially taste our Skalica´s wines. The winemakers will be happy to present their wine and premises, including tasty snacks.
